Hi Syl,
This has been languishing in the Acropolis for nearly 3 weeks so I thought I'd take your advise and move it over to Plato's Pearls. Hope you like it!

Larry

Sea Eagles

A paradox! Sea-scented beaches rise
to where the clouds would break on granite spires
encased in ice. That’s where the eagle flies
to hunt. Its earnest glance in foaming gyres

of crashing waves reveals the food it seeks.
Abundance, as upon the orchard bough,
is gathered for the talons and the beaks
of chicks. They nest where all the peaks soar now.

And of a certain time when all shall fledge,
whether at dawn or in the dust and dark,
their flight’s a path of gold from mountain’s ledge.
To places of their own they all embark

where eagles reign and there’s no sign of men
with fledglings growing when the snows begin.

Hi Larry, wave.gif

This is so lovely! I love the gentle rhythms and can see this vividly. I can even hear them and smell the sea! highfive.gif

Really enjoyed this,

Wow, Larry! This sonnet is stunning, it brings to mind the swooping condors that inhabit the ledges of the Andean pre-cordillera in Patagonia.

I didn't know about sea eagles. Or that they hunt for food in the foaming waves. Would that be the Pacific or the Atlantic?

Eagles are glorious. So glad you chose to write about them in this instance. Perhaps I read it in Acropolis. I'll check it out, if your sonnet is still there.

As Lori says, your imagery is such that one can smell the sea...and perhaps even the ice and snow on the peaks. You bring everything so close to us.

We already have snow on our highest peaks, so with the lovely autumn shades on trees and fallen leaves, all combined makes for a very special season.

Bring on more from the challenges, Larry! There are more to chose now.

Thanks for letting me know,

Hi Lori and Syl,

Gee, didn't think I would get this much activity after a long stint of nothing. Lori, I'm so glad you popped back in to visit us. Hope you and yours are the very best and you are having good luck finding a job.
Syl, to answer your question! Sea eagles are also know as "erne". Wikipedia has a very nice write-up on them if you care to browse.

I shall try to get some more posted in this venue shortly. Very busy getting ready for the oldest granddaughter's wedding this Saturday. Busy, busy, busy!!!!!

Hi Snow,

Thanks for the visit and the nice words. I will try to post other works here but I don't want to hog the forum in case someone else would like to chime in with their poetry.

Hi Larry,
You can have Plato's Pearls of Wisdom all to yourself, if you wish. You certainly deserve to show us your best work in this privileged forum. Imagine yourself as Plato's demiurge, a subordinate deity who somehow created and continues to build this world we live in...LOL. You'll do far better than that deity!

We'll always learn a lot from reading your splendid pieces here.

How did your granddaughter's wedding go? How exciting it must have been. I apologize for not asking about it sooner, but I'm still minus a good computer. With a little bit of luck, I may have one this week. We get a bonus on our retirement income in June, so that should suffice! We get the second bonus for Christmas.
Was the wedding during the day or at night? Hope you had great weather and that everything ran smoothly. A sonnet on the occasion? Yep!

I'll look up "erne" in Wikipedia, thanks for the tip. Did you know that by just "painting" words or phrases with your mouse, you get direct access to Google and Wiki? I only found that out about a year ago! Dumber and dumber...that's me!

Back again, all!

While reading up about "erne's" or "ern" in Wikipedia, I was struck by these magnificent sea eagles, related to the title and content of Larry's lovely sonnet.

Once I got into Wiki, I just followed on and got more information about S.A. condors. I already knew a great deal, but there's always more to learn, wherever you happen to be searching.

And so I remembered this beautiful music about the condor, played on native dwellers' original instruments. This is a modern ecuadorian native musician called Leo Rojas, who has travelled through Europe with enormous success, especially in Germany. I don't know his ethnic group. The president of Ecuador, Miguel Correa, is from one of the many Latin American ethnic first dwellers.

Below is a link to a video of Leo Rojas playing The Condor Passes. I always wonder how, onstage in front of large crowds, the same effect can be achieved.
Hope the link works!

Hello once more Syl,

I'll try to post as many in Plato's as I feel are deserving of a special place in the sun.

Our granddaughter's wedding went fabulous. It was outside in a garden-type setting and although it was very warm (it was hot!) and humid like SE Louisiana always is, the preacher made it quick and finished before it became dark. It was a late evening ceremony followed by the reception which was very well catered. Didn't care much for the music, it being overly "country" but that was her choice. Thanks for asking and I hope you get your new computer soon.

Larry

So glad the wedding went fabulous! I love outdoor weddings, so long as there are no mosquitoes or other insects. (They probably spray the area regularly).

Fancy it's being so hot and humid in Spring. Wonder what summers are like... unsure.gif

Can't help comparing with our own late Autumn. Today we had a max. of 4ºC and a min. of -6ºC!!! Had to turn up the heating.
Forecasts are better, with max. of 9 or 10 with blue skies. Nice.

Also glad the catering was good. And I like country music, but just for a while. There's so much to chose from!

And please, IMO, most or all of your sonnets deserve a place in the sun. sun.gif

Cheers, Syl butterfly.gif
