Encounter of Sorts

It was a hot and humid day
went to the pool after lunch
fair amount of people there
dove in, started swimming laps,

felt a rip tide , a strong one
how can this be
lotsa kids playing and diving
causing turbulence,

it’s almost five o’clock
almost everyone gone
sun’s moved,
trees block a portion of the pool
creating a dark spot,

swimming towards that area,
in my mind I hear a b flat , then  a,
da dum
da dum, da dum,
just like a iambic meter
I look underwater and  see
a great white
what the..

shark is going around in circles
pectoral fins pointed down,
ready to attack
options raced thru my mind
panic or confront,

meanwhile the theme music is getting louder,
dive under, look him in the eye
massive jaw’s wide open
we circle
each looking for a weakness,

move to him
and punch him in the nose,
he back’s off
could’ve sworn I heard
“ow’ that hurts”,

swim by his tail and notice a tag
get up close and it reads
“daily pass
senior sharks water aerobics class”,

asked him why are you here now
“missed the early morning class
making it up”
cool,

since we have the pool to ourselves
lets do some laps,
race ya’
last one to the other end
buys the beer,
yer on.
