What man has done and will do to Mother Earth could be the cause of all the terrible storms, floods and catastrophes we are currently seeing around the world. This is my view of the latest flood in S. E. Louisiana which caused devastation across 26 parishes.

Kismet

As Gaia’s tears descended from dark eyes
to ease her burning wrath; she wished to cleanse
her face with rivers which began to rise
and wash away some unforgiven sins.

Now ghosts, cadavers of each memory
lie moldering by streets and country roads
to rot within the piles of life’s debris.
Cold empty shells that once were fine abodes

have been eviscerated and death’s reek
will permeate the air in neighborhoods
where children played. Their families must seek
some solace from the loss of earthly goods.

Each time, with lessons learned, we’ll not retrace
the scars we leave upon our mother’s face.

When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

Very thought provoking poem Larry, beautifully written. Yes, man is slowly destroying the earth. I love your final couplet. Always a pleasure to read your work.

Hi Snow,

Thanks for popping in for a read and a comment. I didn't know if anyone would even see my rant against the ecological disasters we all face or possibly even care. It is a sad world where the dollar is king and will reign forever but those who are raping the world may not have a long time to spend their profits. Mother Nature can be a cruel bitch sometimes. I just hope I'm not around to see the consequences.

Again, thanks for the nice words.

Larry

Hi Larry,
I was listening on TV about Mathew's wrath these past few days. I do hope your area of Louisiana has not been badly hit again. It said something about this hurricane heading out to sea, but that can always change.

And yes, the weather is behaving catastrophically all over the world. But our leaders just seem to continue warfaring and/or polluting Earth with more pesticides and fertilizers bought from Monsanto. Etc.

Your sonnet is a sad expression of what's going on right now. I'll return to read it again when I feel less glum. The fact that you write such lovely poems about the devastation that's going on, only makes me feel awful tonight. Sorry!! ghostface.gif

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.
