Dear Poetry Aficionados,

Poetry & Poets in Rags blog

Our first story is about the Nobel Prize in Literature going to Mo Yan of China. We apparently have the other side now, as he gets panned by dissidents for being a state writer, something that it seems important not to be if you're from China. It is the other side, because Liu Xiaobo received the Nobel Peace Prize just two years ago, which brought objections from the state of China. Mo Yan brings this full circle by speaking out for the release of Liu Xiaobo. Wouldn't that be great if the words of a "state" Nobelist were able to free a "dissident" Nobelist. This story is further covered in our Great Regulars section by Alison Flood, Luisetta Mudie, David Ulin, and Granta.

Which brings us right to our second story. Video footage of Liu Xiaobo's wife, Liu Xia, who is charged with nothing, and yet under house arrest in China, has been released over the internet.

Which somehow brings us to our third story. Lawrence Ferlinghetti has declined the Janus Pannonius International Poetry Prize on human rights grounds.

Read all about it, and more, including what's on our Back Page, recaps and synopses of The Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival, which took place in Newark this past week end. This is covered in Great Regulars by Jeffrey Brown as well. Lots of poems, lots of poets, lots to read. I'll let you get to it. Thanks for clicking in.

Yours,
Rus
