Nor Crystal Tears

Her eyes devoured the words again, reverberating within her soul as if he spoke them directly. She could imagine the rich timbre of his voice; deep and trembling with barely-suppressed emotion. She crushed the letter to her bosom, gazing ardent towards the picture hung in a place of prominence within her bedroom. Where his visage rested; the last sight before her eyes closed in slumber - the first sight that greeted her upon wakening.

Every morning her arm would stray over the rumpled quilt, questing to find anything within the goose-down confines. But the other side of the four-poster bed was always empty - he was never there in the flesh, only with her in dreams, lacerating her soul with tortured memory.

She smoothed the creases from the letter; she put it with the others she had received. Oh, how these little scraps of paper had changed her life, given her such hope and inspiration. Her eyes fondly roamed over the portrait once again. How dashing he looked in his fine blue suit. His beautiful smouldering eyes shone out from his noble, chiselled face. It had been painted with her in mind; as if the artist had known that she would be staring at it so much.

She had to read through the letters again, embracing his presence that splashed forth from those fevered passages. However, the sight that escaped her lips was bittersweet - if he was not so caring, so fervent and so expressive, her heart's agony would be far less excruciating.

He haunted her apartments like a beloved ghost; she could almost smell his scent upon the air. But he was all in her mind, he was not here.

She caressed the letter as if his words were his flesh, slowly and tenderly. Closing her eyes, she could see her in his arms, holding her close, safe and secure in heartfelt hug. Lost herself in those warm brown orbs, melting as their bodies called to one another through the thin barrier of cloth.

She flushed as her eyes went on with their tale, bodies locked in a dance of hot flesh and rushing blood. She smiled as she imagined her body vibrate with burgeoning sensation - brought to tightening frenzy by his knowing touches.

Then blessed release, an explosion of consciousness blossoming within her mind and soul, unleashing such a quake within her fragile form. Sweet cuddle as aftermath, a perfect moment of communion; of connection with him.

Almost drifting to sleep within this lovely dream, she forced herself to rise above it, she still had things to do before retiring. Awakening to reality, his absence struck her like a physical blow, the pain shuddering through her very psyche.

He wasn't here. When would he be? Would they ever be together?

Neither incandescent rage nor crystal tears would sway the cold heart of Fate. But her dream could not be destroyed, her hope for the future lay protected deep within her heart, no matter how grim the situation could turn.

She had to keep faith; that dark hand of Fate could never steal that treasure away from her.

Setting upon her final task for the evening, she set her fingers around her pen in an unfamiliar way. She tried not to think about the process as her hand scratched out the words in that strong, masculine hand; her heart's essence flowing forth unfettered upon the page.

Would be sent out in the morn, would arrive in her mailbox in the afternoon. She'd read it in the early evening and she would put it with all the other letters.

Tucking herself in, she looked towards the portrait again, gave the painted man a brave little smile as she closed her eyes. Her whispered prayer, the same as it had been every single night:

"Oh, my love; please become real."
