Do we have this here?

I logged out, then came back, and "new posts" only shows posts "since last visit"

Hi Fran.

YES - the old 'Latest Posts' hack is actually part of the "View New Posts" (in your member bar) & "Today's active topics" (at bottom of board) search code here.

When you click on the "View New Posts" link, at the bottom of the displayed results, you'll see a menu:

Get active topics for:

From this selection, you can choose:

So - this is already a benefit of IPB and not a hack - PHEW!

You can also use this feature by using your "My Assistant" as well and clicking the 'New Posts' too.

Another way to access "Latest Posts" is through the "Today's active topics" link. If you scroll toward the bottom of the 'index' page, you'll see a section just underneath the BOARD STATS nav bar with labels (URL's) for:

Today's active topics • The moderating team • Today's top 10 posters • Overall top 10 posters

If you click on the "Today's active topics" link you will see at the bottom the same menu option to "Get active topics for:" just like the tool above in 'View New Posts'.

Cheers!

P.S. I'll copy this over to the FAQ forum too....

Hi Lori

the Get Active Topics isn't as convenient as "Latest Posts" as it takes a lot longer, plus if you read a thread and then want to go back to active topics you have to remember to hit the back button in order to get the list again. If you've made a post, you then have to click the back button several times or you have go through the whole procedure of view new posts and then click on get active topics or go to the main page and click on Todays active posts found below the Board statistics wording.

On the old board you could go directly from a thread or forum to latest posts which was very convenient

Hi Nina.

I have been fiddling and the easiest way for me to 'keep track' is to keep clicking the "View New Posts" link.

If you haven't yet read a new post or reply in that list, you'll see a little box next to the Topic Title. Click on that little box and it will bring you to the last unread post/reply (based on your own cookies).

Note: Once you have read it, you will not see the box again for that particular topic the next time you pull up the 'View New Posts' list again.

Give it a try....

One way around it might be to create the appropriate list with "view new posts", then right-click the box or the "latest post by" and open the link in a new window. That way you should have the window which lists the posts always available while you're off doing other things.

Hmmm - my little box theory might not work - based on a test I just did. Even though I hadn't read a specific thread yet, the next time I went into the list, the little box wasn't there...

Post script: Actually, the little boxes will still be there as long as YOU weren't the last poster in a thread in the list OR you haven't logged out.

I don't see how that helps solve the problem. I often read a post without commenting and then later on when I have more time, I'll reply. Unless someone else has posted it won't come up again in "view new posts"

Yes, in theory that would be a way round it. In practice I'm hopeless at remembering to right click and open in a new window. I always intend to do so when googling and invariably forget.

When you first go into 'View New Posts', it defaults to show you new posts since your last log in. At the bottom of the screen, there is a "Get Active Topics" pull-down which defaults to 'today'. Clicking the GO button will show you posts from the last 24 hours.

Since a thread that you have previously viewed/read is not technically 'new', there is no reason for it to show up again in the intitial 'View New Posts' list. Once you have gotten the expanded list (by clicking the GO button for 'today'), you can use right-click, open in new window to read/reply, while keeping your list available to work through.

Technically, if you have read the post, it is no longer 'new' based on your cookies (and last log in).

Again, just click that GO button to see all new posts in past 24 hours.....

Actually, the little boxes will still be there (in the Topic Titles) as long as YOU weren't the last poster in a thread in the list OR you haven't logged out.
