Ode to a Lily

Your fragrance… cinnamon and honey laced
assails my senses; they admit defeat,
surrendering but glad of being placed
within your aura. It is such a treat

to smell and see a miracle in bloom
or watch as buds reveal a tranquil face.
They touch the soul and brighten every room
with springtime’s scent and petals of white lace.

But as with everything that time may touch,
your beauty fades; so too your bouquet wanes
until there’s nothing left. Death comes to such
whose loveliness, like melody’s refrains,

spawns memories we cherished of life’s song
we learned to sing and found a fragile throng.

When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

A very tight and well-phrased sonnet, as always, Larry.

Stumbled over meaning of two things:

S3L4 ... like melodies' refrains ... perhaps?

Couplet ... What are "fragile throngs" ?

sLightly confused, Daniel sun.gif

Hi Daniel,

Last question first! The “throng” has to do with everything that time will touch and all of that loveliness is “fragile” and will, eventually be ending in death.

The first question has to do with singular-possessive vs. plural-possessive. Life’s song has but one melody which all that exists will sing through their abbreviated life-spans. One song/one melody although there are different refrains. Thus, melody’s refrains!

Hope the clarification helps.

Larry

Okay, then I'd best refrain from further comment lest I burst my fragile thong!

Your fragile thong will never burst
unless you put it on reversed!

That is the start of a moderately bawdy Rondeau/Short Rondeau which I doubt will play, even in these deserted halls.

fragile thongs

Your fragile thong will never burst
for front and back are near the same
unless you put it on reversed
then something might hang out. For shame
that it should look like you are nude
but look once more; they’ll find they’re wrong
and it was not what they construed…
your fragile thong.

As I said in "Karnak", I couldn't help myself because the phrase kept elbowing my muse.
