Rowing my Boat from Shore to Shore

We were children when we lived by the lake.
Your cottage stood, as it still stands now,
across the water, and mine on this shore,
and we would call, then wave and wave.

Each summer eve I rowed from shore
to shore to see you; I had your affection,
but then someone else rowed his boat,
and when you saw sadness cloud my face
you gently mocked: Don’t be cross, but go
on home, and best forget our puppy love.

Your lover went away one autumn day,
and I saw you cry, then wave to catch
my eye, but glumness and hurt pride
still clouded my face, and under my breath
I mocked: Don’t be cross, forget our puppy love.

But time does dull the edge, and my craft
still floats after all these years. Forgotten
is my pride and spurned puppy love of long ago,
and once again we call and wave and wave—
And I row my boat toward your cottage by the lake.

Hello, RC;
thanks for the comment. I haven't visited this site in a while, but I'm glad to see all you talented people from the expired forum here. You might remember me as "Beanstalk." Appreciate the comment,
Jerryk
