Due to someone attempting to abuse our email server (a failed attempt to send out mass amounts of spam), it went into a self-protect mode and turned itself off.  It would have been nice if it had let me know something needed to be looked at before disabling itself, but the system is designed to turn itself off if the amount of mail it's processing (rejects or not) is approaching a threshold which will increase the system load to a level where it would make the rest of the system unusable.

Anyway, I've changed some settings in the firewall and have turned the email system back on.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Thanks Peter

I thought it was something only affecting me.  Still, it is very good that there are the protections in place and better that we lose emails for a short period rather than have the system become unstable and get loads of spam.

You have to be so vigilant these days.  I have seen boards being hacked into and taken over, rendering them unusable.

Hi Peter,

Glad the system worked and protected itself. Didn't affect me as I try not to use email notifications anyway, but I guess a lot of people find it useful.

Thanks,

Fran
