Greetings all,

Just wanted to pop in and apologise for the outage this morning. I've been looking through logs, stats, server hardware, but cannot seem to find a root cause for the outage. I found the system locked hard enough to have to hit the reset button to get it to reboot. So, I'm going to keep digging, but didn't want anyone to think that the issue went unnoticed or that it wasn't being thoroughly researched to figure out why so it doesn't happen again.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused,

I

Hey all. Another one this morning starting around 01:00 EDT (05:00 GMT). Did some more digging and working through logs and stuff with people who are more versed at this kind of thing, we're still working on it..... Apologies again..................... when we figure it out we'll post a resolution for those interested in such things.

Peter, did you get a bug in the server? I didn't notice the outage...So far with my new computer and this vista 64and the anti virus anti spy seems to be doing an excellent job...no problems yet... who are you useing to help with the problem,, I found that majorgeeks.com was a great source of help to me when I first was hooking all this stuff up together.
I hope you find the problem and it isn't too costly to fix.
Steve

Heyo. Yea, definitely some sort of bug in the operating system (the server is running Linux) - looks like they introduced it in the latest set of bug fixes and security patches. So far we've been able to isolate it down to the kernel (for those who are interested in systems architecture and don't already know Unix systems, the kernel is basically the clearing house everything else goes through - video talks to it, disks talk to it, memory talks to it, etc etc etc), looking somewhat towards the video subroutines, something in the graphics portion of the driver seems to cause a memory leak and 100% CPU. Not sure so far what specifically it is, the system just sits at the login screen so it's not an application driven crash. So for more troubleshooting I've disabled everything on the console except text mode and sent off logs and a core dump. We'll see if that gives any additional clues.

Majorgeeks is a good site. I've been working with some people I met from fedoraforum and the kernel mailing list. It's a software driven issue, so it's unlikely to cost anything to fix, but I'd rather see the Raid applied sooner rather than later, if you know what I mean wink.gif

Peter, it sounds like you are going in the right direction,,,ouch what a bug... I thought about using Raid with this new computer but I would have had to buy three more 1TB SATA hard drives to make it work out and I wasn't quite ready to do that yet. I have physical space for 9 hd's but only have 6 connections wierd, I wonder if you can 'Y' the data cable...probably not. I guess I could always go USB to HD's. Well thats down the road a ways yet as I still am only scratching the surface on what I have. What sort of input/output line do you use Peter, cable, DSL or T1 just curious.. I would love to have T1 but I think that it would be cost prohibative for me...I have heard rumors that they are putting in fiberoptic lines wonder how much faster they will be and how much wider a bandwidth they will have... take it easy and hope you get your bug.

Heya. Yea, it's an annoying bug, but you know how it goes, fix one make 3 more...

If you were interested in hard drive protection alone you could always set up a RAID 0 mirror. It won't give you more space or anything, but if one drive dies the other one has a perfect copy of the data so nothing's lost. Nope, you can't Y a SATA cable. Intersting you only have 6 drive sockets on the motherboard, usually they come in sets of 4, two each, one set of standard conectors, one multi-function set that can either be a RAID controller or a standard connector.

The forum is running on a 16MB cable modem connecton. Actually, I'm pretty sure that even the slowest cable connections nowadays are faster than T1 (they only run at 1.5MB). If you have FiOS coming into the area, that would be a cool upgrade. Just like cable they come in a variety of speeds, depending on how much you want to pay.

Take care.
