Hi all,

I've moved this debate out of my own poem's section because it seemed independent ("off topic," if you care for that phrase) and also because it has elicited a strong response, so needs a fair airing.

It was started by Daniel. I cannot move individual entries across and preserve the posters - so each entry will have my name against it. Nevertheless, I have put the real poster's name above that.

Please continue to respond here - I'm sure Daniel would appreciate the feed-back.

All posts on this topic have now been moved - further responses would be appreciated, I'm sure.

James.

Original posting from Daniel...

Hello,

I'm dropping in before an important meeting with our clinical director to discuss a decision to not allow me to use my poetry in support groups. If they stick by that, they're taking away from me one of my most important tools to help people to open up... but, hey, such is life.  Anyhow, I'm going to dry to get her to reconsider.  They've never witnessed my using it, and I suspect that the only one who is objecting is my "supervisor" who hasn't done a lick of supervising since she took the position!

My own reply:

I'm sorry to hear that you may lose that therapy outlet: I wish you luck with your negotiations.

From Daniel:

Well, I just returned from the meeting, and it seems that I've lost the battle ( that I didn't even know existed! )... if not the war.  Frankly, I left, wanting to cry!  Ethical, schmeshical!  In my view, what I've shared has NOTHING WHATEVER to do with ethical standards... and most organizations' and groups' "ethical standards" (in my view) are some of the most unethical bunch of crap I've ever seen.

Anyhow, it apprears that one of the most effective tools in my "bag" has been wrenched from me... a tool that several family specialists in OTHER counties have BORROWED from me with my permission!

sLightly bruised and battered, wanting to just go home right now, Daniel  :sun:

From Nina:

Hi Daniel

I'm sorry to hear that you lost the battle and at the end of the day it is the people in your support group who will suffer.  I'm with you.  Poetry is a  brilliant way of getting people to open up.  Evidence of that can be found on many of the tiles forum.  Like art therapy it is an excellent tool for encouraging people to express their feelings in a way they might not do sitting in front of others talking.

I just wanted to offer my support.

Nina

From Fran:

Dear Daniel,

I agree with Nina and James.

You must be feeling very hurt by that meeting. It does seem strange when so many groups use creativity to spark something more and reach people.

I'm sure everyone here is wishing you well.  :dove:

With warmest best wishes,

Fran

I'm very sorry to have given difficulty in this, folks.  I certainly offered no debate... I merely moaned out my pain in the decision of my agency's Clinical Director.  She interprets passages in APA's and ACA's ethical standards to indicate that my utilizing my own poetry in the program that I work in is a violation of ethical standards.  Her interpretation of that is final.  I have no appeal.

I came home devastated and still don't know (though I've changed my declared plans, and am planning to go to work today) whether I will be able to fulfill my duties today at work.

Thank you for your concerns... and I'm sorry I occasioned a twist off the subject (though I do believe I posted my crit somewhere along the way).

Daniel,

I don't know why you're apologising - no harm done. This is a good point of yours which deserves a fair airing - look at the responses you've had. I certainly have no problem from it. I just thought the two issues different; that's all.

I think what might be helpful, please, is if you'd care to explain a little more about what programme you are tutoring on and why your boss feels that using your poetry is inappropriate - unethical? If you'd care to, that is?

I've not expressed that much sympathy yet because I'm rather confused - don't understand the system in which you're working, nor its aims, nor your role etc.

However, as you are so upset I shall say I am very sorry about that.

Best wishes, James.

Hi Daniel,

Sorry about the setback.  Wishing you well.

Many organizations are financed by individuals with an agenda.  For example an historian hired by a wealthy person to conduct history classes, but only history as the patron desired it presented.

Ignorant of the situation, which need not be divulged as the decisions are now buried in concrete, your situation reminded me of the example above.  There is also the control-freak aspect.  Perhaps your super has no appreciation of the higher arts.

Again, wishing you well.

Don't feel you need to apologise Daniel.  I'm glad James moved the posts over as it gives us the chance to offer you a sympathetic ear and you the opportunity to express your anger and pain over your very narrow sighted Clinical Director.

I'm not surprised that you came home devastated.  I hope it wasn't to difficult for you at work today.

Hi Daniel,

I'm so sorry to hear about your difficulties.  It sounds like you work in a caring profession and work closely with people and I imagine that you using your creativity and talent to help others would have a been a really helpful and unique way to reach out to them.  Is there anyone else you could make a case or appeal to who could maybe speak to the supervisor on your behalf and work something out?

I really hope that it gets sorted and sorry to hear how upset and disappointed that you are.  I work in an caring job as well, and I know how hard it can seem sometimes when you see a positive effect from something you've done but can't seem to convince others about it.

You probably know this already but there is such a thing as poetry therapy and there are a few websites about it?  There are even various courses that one can do in the subject..I wonder if you were to explain that to your supervisor..it sounds quite similar to what you have been doing..

"What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as a fire,
With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
Being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?"
WB Yeats "No Second Troy"
