Seasons in my Mind

In winter when the trees stand stark and bare,
the view behind our house goes on for miles.
I breathe the icy cold that grips the air
and struggle through the snow that drifts in piles
across the road, the walk and up each stair.
We’d watched it fall and couldn’t hide our smiles
until we had to shovel it somewhere.

In early spring the weather’s mighty cool;
I gaze across the fields of greening grass
where daffodils and dandelions rule
and water in the pond is smooth as glass.
Each pothole in the drive becomes a pool
that sparkles as a sunbeam makes a pass
and I’ve forgotten winter was so cruel.

The summer brings us sultry, humid nights
with songs of love-drunk frogs on lily pads,
as moon sends silver beams of rippling lights
and children capture fireflies with their dads.
On windy days, when boys display their kites,
we cheer the proud creations of these lads,
whose works of art are fantasies in flight.

The crisp, cool air of fall sneaks up on me–
from sleeveless shirts to jackets in a blink.
As brilliant reds and golds paint every tree
and Autumn signals one all-knowing wink,
the foliage quite suddenly blows free.
I savor scenes and let their chorus sink
into my favorite stores of memory.

All the seasons in one poem - awesome!
