Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus 65-8BC)

Roman Poet.

Horace wrote many odes.

I believe his quotations are remarkable.

Some Examples.

1 I strive to be brief, I become obscure.

2 Mountains will heave in childbirth, and a silly little mouse will be born.

3 To the Greeks the Muse gave native wit, to the Greeks the gift of graceful eloquence.

4 Not god, nor men, nor even booksellers have to put up with poets' being second - rate.

5 To save a man life against his will is the same as killing him.

6 We are just statistics, born to consume resources.

7 Believe each day that has dawned is your last. Some hour to which you not been looking forward will prove lovely. As for me, if you want a good laugh, you will come and find me fat and sleek, in excellent condition, one of Epicurus' heard of pigs.

8 To marvel at nothing is just about the one and only thing Numicuis, that can make a man happy and keep him that way.

9 Pale Death kicks his way equally into to the cottages of the poor and the castles of kings.

10 Mix a little foolisness with your serious plans:
it's lovely to be silly at the right moment.

11 It is a sweet and seemly thing to die for one's country.

12 While wer're talking time will have meanly run on: pick today's fruits, not relying on the future in the slightest.

Dulce et decorum pro patria mori
is the same bull they have been feeding youn men since Roman days
It is sweeter and more fitting to live for your country
