AN ODE TO A TOMATO

The summer sun
makes you grow so big.
You hang there on the vine
looking oh so divine,
calling out to me
with your rosy red skin.
Your tasty juices make me grin,
and your tender meat
is oh so sweet.

Oh how I love thee
and all of your vitamin C.
You make me swoon,
I am so thankful
you don’t taste like a prune.

Dear John,
I have great respect for humorous verse  and enjoy the way you've abused elements of poetry so as to add to the wry impact.
Prune/swoon is a point indeed. I doubt in serious poetry "prune" would ever appear, certainly not in a rhyme. Here too, the word "prune" is used as its sound is crude and distasteful but its taste is actually pleasant, an element of irony.
I believe writing good humorous verse is a task almost equal to serious good poetry.
Cheers,     jgd
