Lori, I would like to nominate Dani's poem, Wally suggested it , I am noming it and I think Snow seconded the nom. here: A Luring Legacy.

Steve

A Luring Legacy by Daniah Jamil Lababidi

I searched the depths of my convictions,
walked past rosy petals of perfection,
then faltered as unexpected weeds sprang forth
from this earth; my heart.

At garden's edge, I parted the canopy.
Discovering forbidden land,
I inhaled its lustful scents
then succumbed
to a well of wakened desires.

My only succession
lies in the lingering odor
of untilled soil and arid years,
tainting this decaying garden
... my life.

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.

A fine poem Dani - full of regrets, and deeply moving.
A worthy competitor.

Lori,

I would like to nominate Saore's (Sergio's) poem, Quilts, Flags, and other Wrappings to the IBPC for consideration. Although grim I think it is very powerful and very moving.

Steve

Quilts, Flags, and other Wrappings by Sergio Ortiz

I started the quilt
when the only reminder
of civility I had was a stuffed doll

whose button eyes fell off.
Sewed while bathing

under the moon’s eclipse
and watched you throw my porcelain spoons,
a collection of gifts, against the wall.

I stopped stitching
when you drove that bulldozer
in sight of all those present

at Jose's welfare funeral just because
he was gay, and my friend.
Stared at the tangled patches of quilt
as they threw me into a paddy wagon

took me to jail for protesting
that unwinnable war.
I climbed into bed even as Allen lay

covered with Kaposi’s sarcoma
to calm both our fears, his and mine.

Studied you when a signature
to keep your only brother
from becoming homeless
made you shudder
at the funeral expense if he died
while the blotch of endearment you gave him

was still on that piece
of white insignificance.
Then I added the names.

Hi Lori & all,

I would like to nom Dan Culleton's poem, WINTER for this month's IBPC.

I'm impressed by his lovely inner rhymes, striking alliterations and altogether excellent use of vocabulary.
I think his poem contains beauty, mystery and some dark thoughts, all deftly intermingled.

Cheers, Syl***

WINTER by Daniel Culleton

On this settled grove, these rows of trees,
The light bright of the morning shows
To each here present now unquestionably
The fellow presence of each shuddering bough.

On this settled evening too,
Winter devises cruel clarity of sight.
False Spring this week had, demonic, doomed,
Scattered stark children among the starlings.

Shadow of child and bird soared
Until night froze them in a dream.
Always the year returns us without fail
To this ancient darkness and this cold:

Bare branches across a black sky,
Each branch hung with distant stars.
