Beatific Bush

We stomped a disused track
away from safety, and our vehicle

Wild herb, damp soil and perspiration permeata

Grass seeds dislocated and sprang
annoying our city skin

Buffalo weavers, quelea nests with birdsong resonate

Frilly flowers, armour-plated crickets
and black ants sprinkled the veld floor

Thorn bushes, ditches and mosquitoes masquerada

Concealed by vegetation; a munching, horned,
bouldered creature followed us with blind interest

Pursuing animal persuaded, attack not intended…
