Mosaic Musings...interactive poetry reviews _ Poetry Education -> Karnak Crossing _ Nonet

Posted by: Cleo_Serapis Sep 12 03, 05:55

The Nonet is a pleasing form in that when centered on the page, looks like a reversed triangle.

This form has nine lines. The first line has nine syllables, the second line eight syllables, the third line seven syllables, and so on... until line nine that ends the poem with one syllable. It has no other required elements.

line 1 - 9 syllables
line 2 - 8 syllables
line 3 - 7 syllables
line 4 - 6 syllables
line 5 - 5 syllables
line 6 - 4 syllables
line 7 - 3 syllables
line 8 - 2 syllables
line 9 - 1 syllable

Have fun! Daniel - I hope you'll post some as examples?  :sun:

Didn't notice this, LorII!  Here's one to start things off:

Whirlwind Dancin’ Ain’t Wrong After All

dancing free from Satan’s lies, I’m one
with brother, friend, and ‘enemy’
in bounding, senseless Fantasy
yet Truth in all its bindings
sensing it may expound
unbound, now feeling
things forbidden
that in truth
were not
wrong

How about an acrostic nonet:

Eviction

Eventually this day would come;

villain – this procrastination

inexorably . . . must end,

crashing all about you

~ still, my heart pounds out ~

to let you know

it’s firmly

ordered

now

Dear Daniel

Love these two !

Here's a acrostic right back at you, which has the extra dimension of being a picture poem as well !

WHIRLWIND

What a joy, to be in Kansas now,
hoping for something to happen;
interesting, or p'raps not.
Ready to live, to jump,
like flying through air
whirled by the wind.
I am up !
No, go
down.

If this one seems slightly lame, it is. I had a much better one which when nearly finished, the computer crashed, and I lost it, together with that spark of create that set it off.

Dear Daniel

Well ! I'm honored ! (I think ! )

No one has ever written me "an acroschtick nonetsense fable" before !

RICKETTSY VERSE
In the halls of fame, at God's right hand
there sits a poet, Daniel his name,
since time immemorial,
dabbling in verse and worse,
alliteration,
nonsense, nonets;
I do believe
'e well
lives !

And now for something completely different, for the lady who loves us all :

EGYPTIAN ASPERSIONS CAST

Cleopatra, a goddess on earth
loved all but one creature the same;
elephants, Mark Anthony,
or fleas, which made her jump !
Perhaps her judgement
askew. Choice to
take to bosom
rash one :
asp !

Nicely done! I must try these one of these moments! To answer your question, the CHAT ROOM is located in the "ATUM'S ANNEX" Category (fourth one down from the top of the board), inside the Mosaic Miscellany sub-category and then into the forum "The Basilica".

Wow Daniel,

I'm so glad you brought this form to the forefront with your post and I'm impressed that you did so in a challenge format. I had never seen this poetic exercise before (or noticed it). From looking at the post dates, it has seen no action since '05 and that was before I joined MM so I went back to the beginning and read all the posts. The one that intrigued me the most was the "acrostic / nonet". Loving a challenge, I thought I'd try my hand at one of these and jump in with both feet with an inverse double acrostic nonet. So, as Merlin is wont to say: "here 'tis!"

Total knee replacement next Wednesday morning.  Hope I'm not away too long.

Love in Light, Daniel  8-)

I find this ironically appropriate to re-post, since I've just come out of the hospital and rehab to prevent another total replacement of the same knee that was replaced TEN YEARS AGO next week. I had STAPH INFECTION in the same knee (having had a second 'revision' of the knee three years ago, replacing the bottom half of the joint, since it was moving inside the tibia), so it was carved open on the old scars and washed out with 9 liters of solution and stapled back up again. I was in rehab for six weeks receiving intravenous antibiotics every four hours for an hour. The side effect was non-existent 'blisters' I walked on with great pain on the bottom of my right foot and severe pain in the bottom of my Achilles tendon. Since I had a sudden spike in my liver enzymes, I could not take my arthritis medicine until last week. The previous replacement procedures had me up walking 'normally' in about six weeks. I'm only now able to walk a couple dozen yards without my walker. There is still pain in my right foot, but it is much lessened, and the swelling in my knee almost disappeared once I was able to start taking my Arthrotec last week.

I'm THANKFUL !!!

... and I do hope to be able to start offering critique again, now that I can sit comfortably enough to use the computer again!

Not sure that it ought to be reproduced, however. Whatcha think?

the neighbors
used to rattle
with that rap music
when in an apartment
until my speakers were placed
facing against that partition
and played the Eighteen Twelve overture.

here's a toast:
place two slices
in the toaster slots

wait merely a few minutes
and they will pop up nice and brown

overtures negate rap

tantalizing drum beat

echoing through the area.

Silence now follows you into sleep.

unless you miss
her after it's done
and you see your mistakes

you have to decide to live with less

fear and peace

First, I'll answer Daniel's post with one of mine and then will answer Lori's. Whoopee!!! She's back!

wonderful sentences

words
occlude
nuance when
disguised import
escapes reader’s sense
requiring conclusion,
false assumptions or cryptic
unknown meanings which can require
long and intricate explanations

and now - Lori's

rise up one test to end

right
is nine
syllables
ending nonet,
utilizing eight
precludes shortened words so
obliterate and expunge
niggling little contraction;
error line will then be corrected

Hi Lori,

I see you took my Nonet advice and fixed yours. Looks great now!
