Last night while I lay sleeping, I succumbed to endless dreams,
where my imagination was stretched, to limitless extremes.
Where mice and men and all such things, could freely fraternise,
and every God made glory, was set forth before my eyes!

Though lay I in soundest sleep, my soul took to the sky,
where in unspoken language, birds taught me how to fly!
Though I’d no wings I soared, as the lightest feather must,
to float with weightless abandonment, as does a mote of dust.

Above Earth’s sweeping panorama, I wandered as I chose.
Watching, though unseen, to pause in abstract repose.
With the hush descending, when darkest night is nigh,
I sought that illusive moment, which no one dare descry!

Here and there I tarried, as occasion would demand,
finding it most fitting, to humour such inquisitive command.
It gave me opportunity, to view the future and the past.
Though moulded in chaotic confusion, it’s how our dreams are cast.

But quickly fascination fades: the moment brushed aside.
Scenes return to oblivion, as are footprints, banished by the tide.
Thus it is with dreams, that torment the restive mind.
There is no logic to explain, nor reason we might find!

Soon I sensed an urgency, over which I had no control or say.
My thoughts reaching into fantasy, had need to move away.
Back to the unknown future, where awakened from my sleep,
I tried in desperation, to recall such moments I would keep!

But such is the way of dreams, that fleeting come and go,
few are the memories recalled, that they would have us know.
Within scant moments of waking, their visions leave our head,
until the morrow’s night, when fresh illusions take their stead!

(Most nights I dream endlessly - remembering but few !
Nightmares are seldom known. Thankfully! Clear conscience I guess. Lol!)

Another great one, Denis.
Great subject, dreams.

But such is the way of dreams, that fleeting come and go,

Just so! I don't dream a great deal, but when I do, they can be highly vivid. Sometimes my dreams are corporeal, meaning that I sit up in bed and try to talk or touch the "person" standing by my bed, or sitting nearby. As a child, I sleepwalked. Scary...

You've achieved just the right dreamy quality for your poem, as befits the topic. Floating, flying, plummeting, but not really, and so forth. And it really is disappointing when one wakes up with the images very clear in one's mind, then tries to remember them to tell somebody... and they just fade away.

Thanks so much for sharing this piece. I enjoyed it a lot.

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.

Hi Sylvia. Happy New Year to you and yours, and may all your wishes come true in 2017.

Invariably I am knowing, although asleep, that it is a dream and not reality.

Never have I ever felt like trying to 'touch' anyone in my dreams. I find myself an onlooker, intrigued by the often bizarre happenings I'm witnessing, but seemingly knowing I cannot change a thing, no matter how much I would like to!

My dear wife, on the other hand, seldom dreams and can seldom recall what she dreamt. She does have the occasional nightmare. No not me, though that I could understand! Lol.

Here's hoping you have lots of pleasant dreams in the year ahead.

Sweet dreams. Fondest regards. Denis.
