The Soldier’s Girl

She awaits
her reunion…

Ensconced under thatch,
circled by iceberg roses.
Lavender lanes lead
from cobbled stones.
Remembering ~
days in embrace,
hours silently together
beneath feathers.
Her aura unaltered,
white magnolia lingers
in lilac and lace,
on elderly skin.

Soldiers march
from bleeding hearts.
Cheeks dry,
longing remains.
An ambush;
gunpowder blazes.
He returned ~
as a name in a letter.
Words brought
convulsing comfort.
Years erase
loneliness.

She awaits
her reunion…
