Christmas Carollers.

Carollers gathered in the street last night,
rendering Xmas hymns in the dim moonlight.
There were only a few, making up this choir,
who were dressed warmly, in winter attire.

They sang of shepherds, Angels and Orient Kings,
followed by Saints, ships and precious things.
While they sang old favourites, we suggested,
they also performed some, others requested.

Their faces barely lit by the pale winter moon,
they gave forth with voices, sometimes out of tune!
While some strained to reach the high notes required,
others failed to reach them, as lungs expired!

When their singing ended, we thought the small troupe
should take a break, allowing them time to recoup.
So we prepared warm drinks for dry, parched throats
and they removed hats, gloves and heavy topcoats.

But all too soon they had to be on their way,
although there were some who wanted to stay.
As we thanked them for our great Xmas treat,
they slowly filed out into the snowy street.

There, once again their voices were raised in song,
as they sang to shoppers, scurrying along.
A few were persuaded to join in a verse,
as they gladly parted from coins in their purse.

But slowly, the carollers faded from sight,
until they were seen no more, in the pale light.
But we could still hear faint sounds of their singing,
even as they were joined by Christmas bells ringing!

It seems most fitting to rejoice in such a fashion,
with carols and bells spreading their joyful passion.
So let all Christians from around this earth,
joyfully sing to honour Our Saviour’s birth!
