"Wildflower Day"

Simple, happy heads of gold
and pebbles of purple,
tiptoe throughout
our soon-to-die,
humble array.

Our stooped journey
along the highway's side,
a small price paid
for a freshly-picked
piece of today.

Best face forward,
fertile roots
trimmed to fit,
I set the blue-fogged vase
on his sill,
hoping he'll think of me tomorrow,
when he throws away
this wilted bouquet.
