Yukon Gold
The northland tests its men and boys
in ways one can’t imagine
and those who falter, fail or fold
will find their final curtain.
December rips the strongest heart
in this horrific climate,
and only men who dare to stay
are creatures of pure granite.
One afternoon when snows blew wild
like demons on a rampage,
I stayed inside my little shack
and hoped there’d be no damage.
It was a shock to hear a voice
outside my cabin window
on such a day. I rose with joy
to see my friend, Jacques Campeau.
Jacques came to spend the solstice day;
he brought a crock of finest
true Yukon hooch he made himself
from red kinnik last August.
