When Kayleigh puts her make-up on and plays the Modern Miss
I still recall her pre-school years and memories like this;
she scribbled me a letter once, before her alphabet,
I asked her what it said – she said “YOU KNOW I CAN’T READ YET”.

When Angus wants to wrestle me to show how strong he’s got
my mind goes back to ‘Special Care’ where he lay in a cot
with tubes that almost hid him from his mother’s worried eyes
and feeding bottles lying close at least one-third his size.

When Jaime comes to call it’s like a hurricane’s arrived,
she hardly stops to take a breath before her Gran’s been ‘dived’,
a favourite game since early years (though no-one’s quite sure when);
she’s six years old and promised Gran ‘I’ll stop when I turn ten!”

Whenever Yasmin visits us she hides behind the door,
she’s shy and must be coaxed towards the centre of the floor;
it doesn’t do for Superstars to push themselves, you see,
but she’ll perform her repertoire to an audience of me.

Our Tyree’s still a toddler though and yet to show his charms
beyond, of course, intelligence, and talents to alarm
by balancing his toys on Spitz – she’s such a patient cat.
But this is pure indulgence, kids, there’s far too much of that.

Each moment spent with Grandkids is a spoonful of delight,
a soupçon of deliciousness, a ray of Heaven’s light;
a taste of gods’ ambrosia, a waft of angel’s wings,
a glimpse of Shangri-La – in short, the best of everything.

Aweeeeeeeee Jim - ye just nmade me eyes water (with delight)! sun.gif

What a fabulous response to a spoonful of delight! I feel as though I am beginning to know of these 'characters' in your poem. I assume these are your real grand children? How wonderful! hsdance.gif I enjoyed each stanza, the smooth ryhtms and the meter you employed (that you taught me during my RION poem rewrites) - heptameter I recall... I must get back to them and this form!

My fav is definately your closing stanza as it embodies all the wonderful feelings and LOVE that is shared in this family.

Enjoyed the read,

Jim, hello, although I don't personally know you and you have been a member here at MM a while, still welcome back. I really enjoyed this piece, wish i could say I wrote it, it feels like a well worn bathrobe, put on in the middle of the night to go check on one of the children. Very delightful. Mine are all grown, but my grand kids are just such a delight.

Take Care
Steve

Courage is knowing your fear, and continuing on in spite of it.

Weary are the waters flow,
that ebb and neap an undertow.
Far from rushing headlands heights,
lazyly they seep into starlit nights.
And where these waters mix and mingle
bouy bells will slightly jingle.
A warning way for craft to follow
safe to shore, where they'll not wallow.

Hi, Steve,

think we have met at the old TCP some years ago. I didn't stay long, left before the big crash,
since I didn't feel my verse was appropriate there - remember one critique which suggested I use Fedex if I wanted to send a message biggrin.gif

This is about my grandkids, the best in the world but I would say that, wouldn't I? smile.gif

Thank you for stopping by, much appreciated,
Jim
